Vinyl butyl ether is widely used in the chemical industry. It can be used as a solvent in the manufacture of coatings, paints and adhesives. Vinyl butyl ether is also used as a thickener and oil additive in the oil field industry.

There are many ways to prepare vinyl butyl ether, mainly ethylene oxidation with methanol and alcohol intermolecular oxidation. The methanol oxidation of ethylene is obtained by the reaction of ethylene gas and methanol in the presence of a catalyst, while the intermolecular oxidation of alcohol is obtained by the oxidation of ethylene and isobutene in the presence of excessive oxygen to produce vinyl butyl ether.
