Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)

Description

Butanone, also known as Methyl Ethyl Ketone, is an organic compound with the formula CH₃C(O)CH₂CH₃. This colorless liquid has a sharp, sweet odor reminiscent of acetone. It is produced industrially on a large scale but occurs in nature only in trace amounts. Butanone is partially soluble in water and is commonly used as an industrial solvent.

Application

1. It is used as solvent of cellulose acetate, acrylic resin, alkyd resin, coating, ink, binder of dyes, dewaxing agent of lubricating oil, vulcanization accelerator, etc

2. It is used as a reagent for the determination of cadmium, copper and MERCURY, a reference material for chromatographic analysis and a solvent for semiconductor lithography

3. GB 2760-96 stipulates that it is an edible flavor allowed to be used. It is mainly used for making cheese, coffee and banana flavor. It can also be used as extraction solvent.

4. It is mainly used as solvent, such as azeotropic distillation in the extraction process and refining process of lubricating oil dewaxing, coating industry and various resin solvents, vegetable oil. It has the advantages of strong solubility and low volatility compared with acetone. It is a medium boiling ketone solvent. Butanone is also an intermediate for the preparation of medicine, dyes, detergents, spices, antioxidants and some catalysts. It is used as a developer after integrated circuit lithography in the electronic industry for the synthesis of anti peeling agent methyl ethyl ketone oxime, polymerization catalyst methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and corrosion inhibitor methyl pentynol.

5. It is the raw material for the preparation of acaricide.
