Description
Lithium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula LiOH. It can exist in an anhydrous form or as a monohydrate. Both forms are white, hygroscopic solids that are soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol. This compound is classified as a strong base, although it is the weakest known alkali metal hydroxide.
Application
Lithium Compound Production: It is used as a key intermediate in the manufacturing of various lithium compounds and lithium metal.
Lithium-ion Battery Cathodes: Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate is primarily consumed in the production of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium Grease Thickener: The compound is used to produce Lithium 12-hydroxystearate, a popular lithium grease thickener that provides general-purpose lubricating grease with high water resistance and a wide temperature range.
Gas Purification Systems: Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate is useful in building gas purification systems for spacecraft, submarines, and rebreathers, where it helps remove carbon dioxide from exhaled gas by releasing lithium carbonate and water.
Precursor for Lithium-based Oxides: Compared to Lithium Carbonate, Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate is the preferred precursor for the production of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides.
Ceramics and Cement: The compound finds applications in the ceramics industry and is also used in some Portland cement formulations.
Radiation Shielding: Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate serves as a good protection against free neutrons.
Reactor Coolant Alkalization: It is used to alkalize the reactor coolant in pressurized water reactors for corrosion control.
